On My Parents’ Shoulders

Growing up in Taiwan, Janet Liu had no memory of her father, who had left to study abroad when she was very young. At age 10, she finally met him when she and her family came to join him in America. He turned out to be a kind and supportive father. Then, coming home one day, she saw an ambulance carrying him out of her life. He died suddenly, leaving Janet’s mother in a foreign country, with no legal papers, few job prospects, and two young children to raise.

I Am An American Live is a production of the award-winning nonprofit The Immigrant Story. The stories were presented live at First Congregational Church of Christ, Portland, OR on Saturday, November 11, 2022. This series of events is part of the programming by the Oregon Rises Above Hate coalition, with the aim of drawing attention to the historic xenophobia experienced by the Asian American community in Oregon and across the U.S.
