Sankar Raman / The Immigrant Story

Mae Ghylin is majoring in Arabic at Portland State University. In 2017, she was granted a scholarship by the US State Department to study Arabic in Morocco, where she fell in love with the region’s communal culture and the many tea breaks. She has since continued her studies in Arabic, culture, and politics in Jerusalem, Jordan, Egypt, and Spain. Having grown up in a small town, Mae first found her love for traveling and cultures through reading biographies. It was through books that Mae was first exposed to people with different backgrounds and worldviews than her. She has experienced, herself, the power of sharing stories, and she hopes to continue the work by being a conduit for others in writing their life stories.
