Honoring Immigrants and Refugees in Our Community

“Our Community, Our Stories” honors immigrants and refugees who are building new lives in our community. Our staff documented these stories in 2017 and 2018, chronicling their journeys, their search for belonging, and their struggles with finding themselves as others in their adopted country.

Using a narrative style that provides a platform for the voices and perspectives of these immigrants, The Immigrant Story (TIS) produced short-form accounts to document their experiences. Each story is accompanied by a photograph of the subject. The story and photo are juxtaposed so that viewers may connect more fully with the subject. The result is a gripping exhibit that amplifies the underlying emotions of this community.

The Immigrant Story is proud to be a platform for all underrepresented voices in our community. Our hope is that this display will provide an opportunity for visitors to explore the strength, resilience, and diversity within our community and to celebrate the vibrancy that our new neighbors bring with them to their new home.

We are thankful to the city of Hillsboro for providing this opportunity. We also want to thank our partners, Pro Photo Supply, Rhino Digital Printing, and the Cultural Coalition of Washington County for their sponsorship.
