The Immigrant Story, in collaboration with The Conversation Project, is proud to present our acclaimed live storytelling event, The Immigrant Story Live to cultivate conversation across differences and create communities of equity and inclusion.
Join us in Hudson Hall Rogers Music Center (900 State St, Salem, Oregon) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
As our state—and our nation—enter a pivotal moment in a conversation around immigration that is too often clouded by misinformation and politicization, the show will begin with four powerful stories that shine a bright light on the lived experiences of migrants who now call Oregon home. Some have traveled long and difficult paths to get here; others are part of a new generation, rooted in the dreams and aspirations of their families. Together, their voices enrich the vibrant cultural tapestry that defines our state.
After a brief intermission, the evening comes alive with the vibrant rhythms of mariachi music and traditional dance, featuring the captivating Gemanereida Barragan-Cruz, a finalist in the 26th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza National Vocal Competition. She is accompanied and supported by the acclaimed ensemble Mariachi Tradición and Alumni, under the creative direction of award-winning director Leslie Núñez of the Forest Grove High School Mariachi Band. The music and dance, rooted in generations of tradition from Mexico, are living testaments to the resilience and richness of a community that continues to inspire and enrich the broader fabric of American life.
Join us for an evening of impactful stories and joyful music from Oregonians who share the places they’ve built, the traditions they’ve carried, and what it means to truly belong. This is a celebration of community—of the color, spirit, and heart of a shared culture that continues to grow and thrive. Together, we create a home where everyone belongs, no matter where we came from or the journey that brought us here.

En el ambiente actual, nuestro estado y nación se encuentran en un momento crucial en torno al tema de la inmigración, distorsionado por la desinformación y politización; aun así, y también por ello, comenzamos la celebración con cuatro poderosas historias que iluminan las experiencias de vida de jóvenes migrantes que ahora encuentran su hogar en Oregon. Algunos han viajado por largos y difíciles caminos para llegar aquí, otros son parte de una nueva generación que toma raíz en los sueños y aspiraciones de sus familias. Juntas, sus voces enriquecen el vibrante tapiz cultural que define a nuestro estado.
Después de un breve intermedio, la noche se anima con los ritmos del Mariachi y la Danza Tradicional, presentando a la cautivadora Gemanereida Barragan-Cruz, finalista de la Competencia Nacional Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza en su 26ª. Edición. Acompañada por el reconocido Mariachi Tradición, bajo la dirección creativa de Leslie Núñez, reconocida directora de la Forest Grove High School Mariachi Band. Esta música y danza, enraizada en generaciones de tradiciones mexicanas, son testamentos vivos de la resiliencia y la riqueza de una comunidad que continúa inspirando y enriqueciendo la cultura de la vida americana.
Acompáñenos en esta velada llena de historias impactantes y alegre música, presentada por gente de Oregon que nos comparte los lugares que han construido, las tradiciones que han cargado consigo, y el significado de realmente pertenecer. Esta es una celebración de comunidad – del color, el espíritu y el corazón de una cultura compartida que continúa creciendo y prosperando. Juntos, creamos un hogar donde todos pertenecemos, sin importar de dónde venimos, o qué caminos nos trajeron hasta aquí.
