In observance of Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, we at The Immigrant Story invite you to join us on May 24 for our fourth edition of “I Am An American Live.” This event is part of the programming by the Oregon Rises Above Hate coalition, with the aim of drawing attention to the historic xenophobia experienced by the AANHPI community in Oregon and across the U.S.

At 7 pm, the evening program, “I Am An American Live,” begins with four storytellers from Vietnam, Nepal, Malaysia and Afghanistan sharing their experiences of what it means to belong in America, even while at times being excluded. These storytellers, from diverse backgrounds across Asia, reveal how their lived experiences empowered them to drive change for themselves and their communities.

Following a brief intermission, the evening will continue with a melodious vocal performance by Shivani Joshi. She’ll treat us to a soulful performance of traditional Ghazals and Qawwalis from South Asia. Joining Joshi will be a talented ensemble of eight musicians, each with their own unique expertise, blending Sufi sounds with Western harmonies. This remarkable fusion is the result of a collaborative effort between Shivani Joshi (vocals), Joseph Harchanko (strings), and Fiaindratovo (Mimy) Manavihare (percussion). Together, they’ll create an unforgettable experience.

Join us for an evening of stories and music from Oregonians, about the places they built, the traditions they brought, and what it has meant to belong in their hometown.
