“There isn’t anyone you couldn’t love once you’ve heard their story.” ~Mary Lou Kownacki
We believe by sharing our stories, we enhance empathy and thereby create a shared community to achieve a greater humanity. Our country has been immensely strengthened by immigrants in numerous ways. We have been and continue to be a nation of immigrants. The stories of immigrants are our collective story that form the very fabric of our nation. In essence, they are our story.
Sankar Raman, a Northwest Digital Art Photographer, conceived the idea of collecting stories and photographs of immigrants to document and archive the voices of our nation in 2017. This project, ‘The Immigrant Story is the American Story,’ is an assortment of stories of immigrants and refugees from all walks of life. It is a narrative of their struggles, hopes, fears, and resilience.
It is the story behind the photograph that sometimes enhances the picture, but in reality, they are intertwined and produce stunning accounts of each immigrant’s journey in our country.
