During the 1990s, Bhutan’s policy of “One Nation, One People,” forced Nabin Dhimal, who was just a young child at the time, to leave his home with his family and resettle at a refugee camp in Nepal. Although he was living with more than 50,000 other refugees in a camp without electricity, Dhimal remained hopeful and determined. As a teenager, he exhibited signs of industriousness by running a small food cart that sold pakoras and samosas in order to make money for his family. One day, the family lost everything in a fire. With nothing to lose, they applied for immigration status in the United States. Today, Dhimal is enrolled in a master’s program at Portland State University and hopes to encourage other young people who have experienced trauma in childhood to attend college.
